Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Tuesday visited the residence of Chandan Kumar, 37, who died after being shot by unidentified men in the parking lot of a busy shopping centre in Toronto, Canada, on February 7, and expressed his condolences to the family in Tyamgondlu village, Nelamangala taluk, Bengaluru Rural District.

He reassured the parents that necessary steps would be taken to bring Chandan’s body to the village.

Chandan’s father Nandakumar, requested that his deceased son be cremated at his home town . “I had insisted my son not go to Canada. I had asked him to get married. When he got the opportunity to go abroad, he convinced me to let him go,” Mr. Nandakumar said with tears.

Mr. Chandan Kumar, the only son of retired teacher Nandakumar and Shailaja, had been living in Toronto, Canada, for the past seven years and was working at LTIMindtree.

Later, addressing the media, Dr. Parameshwara said, “We are in constant touch with the Indian Embassy to bring Chandan’s body to Bengaluru. The investigation into the case is under way, and the Canadian police will hand over the body to Chandan’s friends on Wednesday. The body will reach Bengaluru on February 14. After that, the necessary legal procedures will be completed at the airport, and the body will be handed over to the parents”.

Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who spoke to Chandan’s parents over the phone, expressed regret that a great injustice had been done. He assured that he would be in constant contact with the Embassy and try to bring the body as soon as possible.
