After years of efforts, Chamarajanagar district’s first Government Law College was inaugurated in the town on Friday (December 27, 2025).

Inaugurating the Government Law College, MSIL chairman C. Puttaranga Shetty, who is also the MLA representing Chamarajanagar, recalled that the process to establish the college in the district had begun years ago, with the late former MP R. Dhruvanarayan working hard for the same.

The district’s first law college has been established due to continuous efforts, he said, while calling upon the students of the district to study diligently and bring recognition to the district. The students should successfully complete their law degree and secure higher opportunities, he said.

The inauguration of the Government Law College in Chamarajanagar comes months after permission was issued by the Bar Council of India earlier this year following an appeal made by present MP Sunil Bose.

While the State Government had already permitted a three-year LLB and five-year BA LLB courses earlier, Mr. Bose had written a letter to the Bar Council in April this year highlighting the hardships faced by local students, who were compelled to travel long distances to pursue legal education, often facing financial and logistical issues.

Meanwhile, Mr. Shetty, in his address at the inauguration of the Government Law College, pointed out that the district already has an engineering, a medical, ITI, residential degree college, a university, as well as an agricultural science college. All these facilities have been provided to develop the district educationally, he said, while adding that a separate building for the law college will be constructed in one or two years.

Meanwhile, Chamarajanagar Urban Development Authority (CHUDA) Chairman Mohammed Asghar Munna, in his address on the occasion, said education is being given high priority in the district with institutions offering courses in various disciplines. “After many years of efforts, the students now have an opportunity to pursue legal education in the district itself”, he said.

Government Law College Principal K.S. Lalithabai said Mr. Shetty had provided furniture worth ₹ 13 lakh to the college while Mr. Bose had donated books worth ₹5 lakh.

Assistant Professor of the College Ms. Ashwini said the three-year law courses have currently been launched and hoped the five-year integrated degree course will also launched in the coming years.
