Class 12 candidates who had applied for re-evaluation of their answer sheets for the CBSE board examinations have reported a substantial increase in their scores after the re-evaluation results were released on June 21.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been under the scanner in the wake of evaluation discrepancies following the implementation of the on-screen marking (OSM) system to evaluate the answer sheets for the first time for the academic year of 2026-27. Students had complained of receiving blurry answer sheets, missing pages, missing maps or graphs, and answer book for a particular set of questions evaluated against the marking scheme of a different set.
While more than 1.6 lakh candidates had applied for the re-evaluation, at least 1.39 lakh of them got their results on June 21. The results of the rest will be released in phases soon, the CBSE has said.
Candidates across the board have reported a substantial increase in marks following the re-evaluation.
A student from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh had previously received 71 marks out of 100 in Physics. “After re-evaluation, his score increased to 90. This was due to an increase in the marks in the theory paper from 41 to 60. The marks for the practical component remained the same,” a family member of the student said, who did not wish to be named. The Hindu accessed both the new and the old scores of the student.
Similarly, in a private school in West Bengal, at least six students saw a significant revision in scores in their History paper. “One of the students had scored 74 out of 100 in History and after the re-evaluation results came in, she has scored 97 out of 100. In another case, a student had scored 72 marks, and after re-evaluation, has scored 87 marks,” said a teacher from the school.
‘School topper has changed’
“Most students in West Bengal have already completed college admission processes, mostly on basis of old marks. After the CBSE re-evaluation results came in, our school topper has changed. We are still assessing the situation and also expecting students to get substantially higher marks in Sociology,” the teacher mentioned.
A CSBE evaluator who examined the answer sheets using the OSM technology told The Hindu that the CBSE had declared that the evaluation had to be done using the OSM system, just two weeks before the evaluation was to start. “It was a complete mess. Some answer scripts were not completely scanned and were rejected by evaluators. Teachers in far-flung areas have scanty knowledge of operating computers and they could have found it difficult to evaluate the answer scripts,” the evaluator said requesting anonymity.
A student in Odisha received an increase of 12 marks in Chemistry and five marks in English in the re-evaluation results, while another student in Delhi received an increase of five marks in History.
The CBSE has not given official data as to how many students who applied for re-evaluation have seen their scores increase.
“The results of around 87% of candidates who have applied for Re-evaluation and/or Verification of Issues observed have been declared. The outcomes for the remaining candidates will also be released in phases and the entire process is expected to be completed soon,” the CBSE stated in an official release.
The CBSE had originally declared the results of the Class 12 examinations on May 13 for approximately 17.69 lakh candidates.
As part of its post-result services, the CBSE had opened a window for the candidates to obtain the scanned copies of their evaluated answer books from May 19 to May 25. Subsequently, the candidates were given the opportunity to apply for Verification of Issues observed and/or Re-evaluation from June 2 to June 7.
Candidates who applied for the Verification of Issues observed and for whom the CBSE has reported the outcome as “No-change” would be offered an opportunity, if they wish to inspect their answer books at the concerned CBSE Regional Office, the CBSE stated in the release.
As was done last year, in all such cases of Verification of Issues observed, where the claim of a candidate has been established, the same is being corrected and evaluated by the CBSE and their marks updated. The candidates can see the status of their requests on the Digilocker platform.
While revised mark sheets are being uploaded on Digilocker, the CBSE has yet not clarified whether it will issue physical mark sheet copies with revised marks.
CBSE officials said that last year the outcome of re-evaluation and verification issues was released starting June 27 till July 11.
They also stated that every application received from students was examined on merit and each answer book undergoing re-evaluation was checked by two evaluators.
“Wherever, due to some reason including evaluators assessment, the marks are not as per the marking scheme, those are corrected through the re-evaluation process,” the officials said.
The CBSE has reduced the fee for scanned copies from ₹700 to ₹100, for verification of issues observed in answer books from ₹500 to ₹100, and for re-evaluation from ₹100 to ₹25 per question.
Officials have also stated that the fee shall be refunded in case of increase of marks to source accounts after the result of re-evaluation.
The CBSE has also stated that the notification of supplementary examinations for private and regular candidates shall be issued soon.
