The University of Calicut is planning to set up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) on its main campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.

A proposal for the purpose, presented by Vice-Chancellor (V-C) P. Raveendran, was approved at the university’s Syndicate meeting held on Saturday (March 1, 2026). According to Syndicate members who attended the meeting, the centre will offer training and research facilities with international standards to the students. The university will launch new and advanced courses for this.

Sources said that facilities would be provided for the centre in the new building complex of the university. Mr. Raveendran told the meeting that a blue print for the centre would be prepared after consulting AI experts in India and abroad. Highly qualified teachers and high class infrastructure would be provided. The centre would also boost the job prospects of the students, he added.

Meanwhile, the university has set up a Syndicate sub-committee for framing rules related to international academic collaborations. The possibilities of twinning academic programmes (where the students split their course between a local institution and a foreign university, finally getting the degree from the latter), along with joint and dual degree programmes will be explored. The aim is to control migration of students to other countries and improve the university’s rankings by the National Institutional Ranking Framework, and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
