The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) rejected Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee’s prayer seeking an urgent hearing in a matter citing his plans to go abroad for medical treatment. Mr. Banerjee, who is facing a battery of cases and FIRs, had prayed for an early hearing citing that he plans to visit abroad for his eye treatment. Justice Saugata Bhattacharya of the High Court said that the case will be listed for hearing in normal process and urgent hearing cannot be allowed.

The Trinamool leader has been questioned by the West Bengal CID in the State Assembly signature fraud case and for making inflammatory remarks during election campaign. Mr. Banerjee said also been questioned by Enforcement Directorate in a recruitment scam. Despite the summons and questioning there is no obstacle for the Trinamool leader to travel abroad.

In October 2016, Mr. Banerjee met with an accident while returning to Kolkata from a party program in Murshidabad. He suffered serious injuries under his eyes in the accident and had to undergo a surgery.

Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered against former mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Atin Ghosh and his daughter Priyadarshini Ghosh, on charges of land grabbing and fraud.
