HYDERABAD

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) cadre staged protests across Telangana on Sunday against summoning former Chief Minister and president of the party K. Chandrashekhar Rao by the special investigation team (SIT) in the case of alleged phone-tapping. Tension prevailed at several places as the police prevented them from taking out rallies, dharnas and effigy-burning.

At Telangana Bhavan, the party head office here, there was scuffle between the BRS workers and the police personnel several times as they tried to burn the effigies of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and to proceed towards Nandinagar residence of KCR, where he was being examined by the SIT as a witness in the case.

In several district and constituency headquarters the BRS leaders, including sitting and former MLAs, MLCs, MPs, former ministers and other senior leaders, led the rallies and other forms of protests including rasta-rokos, bike-rallies and black flag marches. They termed the SIT notice to KCR as political harassment, particularly with a vengeance.

Party leaders and former ministers P. Sabitha Indra Reddy, V. Sunitha Laxma Reddy, S. Niranjan Reddy, G. Jagadish Reddy alleged that the case was foisted in the backdrop of a case booked against Mr. Revanth Reddy when he was with Telugu Desam Party and was caught red-handed with a bag containing bundles of huge cash to bribe an MLA seeking his support to TDP in the MLC election in 2015.

Party general secretary and former IPS officer R.S. Praveen Kumar said it was an unrelated and unwanted false case made to harass KCR politically. He reiterated that phone-tapping was very much legal when it was done as per the guidelines prescribed by the Supreme Court and every State and the Central Government had been engaged in it for long. He sought to know whether any terror attack foiled so far was possible without phone-tapping.

‘Won’t be shaken by cheap tactics’

Working president of the party K.T. Rama Rao said: “A man who didn’t cower under Delhi’s pressure, a man who didn’t for even a second stray away from the long battle for Telangana, a man who didn’t wince despite all the hardships for this State and a man who stood strongly against all evil forces won’t be shaken by your cheap tactics. KCR is invincible and fools can’t understand history, let alone create it.”

Taking a dig at the Chief Minister indirectly, without taking his (CM’s) name or position, KTR stated: “You shiver at his name. You have no stature to take his name. You may spew poison today, but he is indestructible. He is the history of Telangana, and you wouldn’t even be a footnote”.

After nearly five hours of examination by the SIT officials, KCR accompanied by party leaders went to the balcony of Nandinagar residence and waved and greeted a large number of party ranks gathered outside.
