The BJP claimed to have crossed the ‘magic figure’ required to take over the reins of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation (MCK), the results of which were announced on Friday.

The party emerged as the single largest party in the MCK by winning 30 divisions out of the total 66 divisions.

According to party sources, two newly elected corporators, including an independent corporator and an AIFB corporator, joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay soon after the declaration of results in Karimnagar late on Friday evening. Sources in the BJP said that two more independent corporators — V. Kavitha and M. Ganesh — also joined the BJP in Hyderabad on Saturday (February 14) evening.

Party sources added that the BJP will win the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts in the indirect elections to be held on February 16.

Mr. Sanjay, who is representing Karimnagar in Lok Sabha, can vote in the MCK Mayoral elections as an ex-officio member.
