The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday said the Congress leader K.C. Venugopal’s allegations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) were “baseless and politically motivated”.
The response came after Mr. Venugopal, the Congress general secretary, in a post on X, said: “In typical BJP fashion, HM Amit Shah has lied to the CBCI about FCRA and is wrongly deflecting blame to hide his government’s culpability in weaponising the FCRA laws.”
“In reality, the Modi government has been hell bent on using the FCRA to harass vocal civil society organisations and minority-run institutions and take over their properties,” he alleged.
On Friday (July 10, 2026), the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) urged Mr. Shah to withdraw the FCRA Bill, 2026, and the recently notified Rules, requesting that both be redrafted after wider consultation with stakeholders.
Responding to the Congress leader’s post, BJP MP and spokesperson Sambit Patra said in a post on X: “Mr. K.C. Venugopal, it seems that the entire Congress party has gotten into the habit of serving up lies and everyone in the party has been assigned the responsibility of spreading different lies.”
He said: “The confusion being spread by the Opposition and certain vested interests regarding the amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) is completely baseless and politically motivated.”
“Venugopal ji, all the allegations made by you are not only baseless and far-fetched but also laughable. In any case, this Bill is going to be introduced in Parliament. There will certainly be a discussion there. The truth will come out, and the facts will become clear,” said Mr. Patra.
He said the Modi government did not operate on the “low-trust” policy of the Congress-led UPA government , but rather on “high accountability” and “nation first” principles.
