The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai, organised a jewellers’ awareness programme on hallmarking at Arcot town in Ranipet.

According to a press release, as Ranipet is a non-mandatory district, the programme aimed to enhance awareness among jewellers on BIS hallmarking standards, regulatory requirements and the digital services offered by BIS for seamless compliance.

“With the steady rise in gold prices, consumers are making significant financial investments while purchasing jewellery. Strict adherence to hallmarking norms strengthens consumer confidence and enhances the reputation of the jewellery trade,” said S. D. Dayanand, Senior Director and Head, BIS (Chennai).

B.J. Gowththam, Joint Director, BIS (Chennai), explained about the hallmarking scheme, regulatory responsibilities of jewellers, essential requirements under the relevant Indian Standards for gold and silver jewellery, hallmarking procedures and quality control mechanisms.

An interactive open house session was also held, in which participants raised queries relating to hallmarking centre coordination, compliance requirements, penalty provisions, documentation, portal usage and inspection mechanisms, the release said.
