The Bengaluru South City Corporation presented its budget for 2026–27 on Saturday (March 28), with Commissioner Ramesh K.N. outlining a roadmap focused on decentralised governance, infrastructure expansion, revenue augmentation, and citizen welfare.
To strengthen financial oversight, a special vigilance squad will be formed to detect tax evasion and illegal constructions, while a high-level expert committee will guide urban development strategies, according to the budget.
Revenue goal
On the revenue front, the Corporation aims to generate ₹126 crore through a new advertisement policy, while ensuring no increase in property tax, which is projected to yield ₹1,101.3 crore. Additionally, conversion of ‘B Khata’ to ‘A Khata’ properties is expected to bring in ₹225 crore, supported by full digitisation of property records.
A smart parking system is set to be introduced, generating an estimated ₹40 crore annually. For mobility and infrastructure, ₹50.45 crore has been earmarked for land acquisition, with major road projects including Bannerghatta Road redevelopment and widening of key corridors such as Subramanyapura Road and Begur Main Road.
In urban planning, ₹5 crore has been allocated for a Comprehensive Master Plan, while building approvals and Premium FAR are expected to generate ₹382 crore and ₹360 crore respectively. Infrastructure development remains a major focus, with ₹433 crore earmarked for road upgrades and ₹162 crore allocated for ward-level works.
Lake initiatives
South Bengaluru, which consists of 59 living lakes, will see phased development of the lakes and introduction of treated water supply systems. It is proposed to utilise the treated excess water from the residential apartment complexes to fill up surrounding lakes in accordance with the standards prescribed by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB). The budget states that Begur and Madiwala lakes will be developed from a tourism perspective. It is proposed to introduce boating facilities in these two lakes on a pilot basis under the Public-Private Partnership model.
In the social sector, ₹260.67 crore has been earmarked for welfare programmes, including housing subsidies, education support, and livelihood schemes. Financial assistance for housing alone accounts for ₹88.25 crore and the regularisation of 1,929 pourakarmikas.
The South City Corporation estimates that total receipts are worth ₹3,826.43 crore against an expenditure of ₹3,825.95 crore, resulting in a marginal surplus of ₹48.21 lakh. Revenue from own sources is pegged at ₹2,795.15 crore, while grants from the Union and State governments are expected to contribute ₹927.31 crore.
