A director of a multinational company was duped of ₹7.5 lakh after a cyber fraudster, posing as his company’s CEO, tricked him into buying Apple store gift vouchers.

Baed on a complaint filed by Abhishek Mitra, the Whitefield Division Cyber Crime Police have registered an FIR on Friday charging the accused under the IT Act, 2000, and also under sections 318 (cheating) and 319 (cheating by impersonation) of the BNS, 2023, for further investigation.

In his complaint, Mitra said that he had received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number belonging to the accused, who posed as the CEO of his company and claimed that he was in the middle of a meeting in the U.S. The accused reportedly asked Mitra to purchase Apple store vouchers.

Without verifying further, Mitra followed the instructions and purchased 80 Apple store vouchers online and shared the code with the accused. The fraud came to light when the accused allegedly told Mitra he had not received any such message with codes.
