Bengaluru police, on Friday, arrested a 21-year-old autorickshaw driver for allegedly abusing a woman from Northeast India after she cancelled her Uber ride in Kothanur, northeast Bengaluru.

The driver has been identified as Pavan H.S., a resident of Gunjur and a native of Mandya, police said. He has been remanded in judicial custody.

According to the police, the incident took place on October 2 when the woman booked an autorickshaw ride from Kyalasanahalli near Kothanur to Banaswadi. “He updated that he had arrived at the location, but he was not at the pick-up point. After waiting for six to seven minutes, I took another auto and was about to leave when he arrived,” the woman stated in her complaint.

She alleged that the suspect abused her and threatened her, demanding that she speak in Kannada. Based on her complaint, Kothanur police booked Pavan for offences including outraging the modesty of a woman, intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, and criminal intimidation under BNS.

A police officer investigating the case told The Hindu that the suspect claimed the woman kept changing the pick-up location and that the directions she gave were confusing. He further claimed that she cancelled the ride just as he was about to arrive. Police have recorded his statement and are verifying his claims.
