Three men allegedly attempted to kidnap a teenage girl who was on her way to college in Belthangady police limits of Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka on February 9.

According to police, the 16 year-old first PU student was on her way to college on a two-wheeler in the morning when she was waylaid by the trio, who were in a multi-utility vehicle with their faces covered. The three men attempted to drag the girl into their vehicle

When she resisted, they allegedly assaulted her with a knife causing minor injuries. The men fled from the spot when a passer-by rushed to the aid of the girl.

The girl, along with her parents, approached the police and filed a complaint. Belthangady police are investigating.

MLA complains of lawlessness

After meeting the girl and her parents at the hospital, Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja told reporters that the incident highlighted the lawlessness, not only in Dakshina Kannada district, but also across Karnataka.

“The Home Department has time and again demonstrated its inability to maintain law and order,” the MLA claimed. He urged the police to act swiftly and arrest the three men who attempted to kidnap the girl.
