Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (October 6, 2025) termed appalling the attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Sankar Ghosh in north Bengal during their visit to flood-affected areas. He said the attack highlighted “absolutely pathetic law and order situation in the State [West Bengal]”.
“The manner in which our party colleagues, including a sitting MP and MLA, were attacked in West Bengal for serving the people affected by floods and landslides is outright appalling. It highlights the insensitivity of the TMC as well as the absolutely pathetic law and order situation in the State,” Mr. Modi posted on social media.
The Prime Minister expressed hope that the West Bengal government and the Trinamool Congress would be “more focused on helping people rather than indulging in violence in such a challenging situation”.
“I call upon BJP karyakartas to continue working among the people and assist in the ongoing rescue operations,” Mr. Modi said.
Serious injuries
During their visit to Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district, Mr. Murmu and Mr. Ghosh were attacked by a mob. Mr. Murmu, who represents Malda Dakshin Lok Sabha seat, sustained serious injuries in the head and face and had to be hospitalised.
This is one of the first occasions when the Prime Minister had posted on social media about the attack on his party colleagues in West Bengal. Incidents of attacks on party leaders, including MPs, have been reported in the past also. After the 2021 Assembly polls, there was widespread political violence and scores of BJP supporters were killed in West Bengal.
During the day, BJP president J.P. Nadda reached out to Mr. Murmu and enquired about the attack.
Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, in a social media post, tried to identify those who were responsible for the attack. Mr. Adhikari said those behind the attack were from a particular community who had attacked his convoy at Khagrabari at Cooch Behar in north Bengal. The Trinamool Congress had denied any role in the attack on BJP lawmakers and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged people to exercise restraint.
