Property crimes, including theft, robberies, and burglaries, came down by 17% in the Nilgiris in 2025, when compared to the previous year, a statement from the Nilgiris district police said.
Based on the statistics provided by the District Crime Records Bureau of the Nilgiris district police, the number of property crimes dropped from 71 cases in 2024 to 59 last year, with 85% of the cases being detected and solved by the police. The police also managed to get successful convictions in 33 property crime cases during the year, the statement said.
The Nilgiris police also solved all 168 reports of physical assault cases received in 2025. They registered 1,67,332 cases related to traffic violations; over 1,200 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol were registered, in addition to more than 1,300 cases of dangerous and negligent driving.
The police added that five persons were booked under the Goondas Act in 2025.
The Nilgiris district Superintendent of Police, N.S. Nisha, speaking about the initiatives undertaken to improve policing to safeguard citizens, especially women and children as well as tourists, said that “Oorai Thedi Kavalan,” “Project Agni,” “Police Akka,” “Cyber Pallikoodam,” and “Pink Patrol” have helped bring down crime, aided in detection, and has benefited local communities.
Ms. Nisha also said that 72 cameras have been installed in Masinagudi, Naduvattam, Ooty Town, and Ooty Rural police station limits to maintain vigilance and monitor traffic.
