A portion of a stone quarry in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra collapsed on Saturday evening (November 15, 2025), leaving several workers trapped under the rubble. At least one person was killed and around 15 others remain trapped as of early Sunday (November 16, 2025).
According to officials, one person’s body has been recovered so far as rescue teams continue operations at the site. A team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) from Mirzapur also reached the site to assist rescue operations.
Heavy machinery, along with specialised personnel, is being used to remove the debris and widen access to the collapsed area as quickly as possible.
District Magistrate B.N. Singh said a wall inside Krishna Mines quarry suddenly caved in, trapping the workers there.
The exact number of people trapped is still unknown but Uttar Pradesh minister Sanjeev Kumar Gond, who visited the site in Billi Markundi village in Sonbhadra district, said “around a dozen labourers” may be under the debris.
“The district magistrate, superintendent of police and other officials are at the spot, and relief operations are underway. I am also present here and every possible effort is being made,” Mr. Gond said.
He added that the circumstances under which the mine was operating will be investigated.
“Strict action will be taken against those found guilty. We stand with the families of the victims.” Mr. Gond said that ex-gratia compensation would be provided to people affected in the incident.
