The National Institute of Technology (NIT) in southern Assam’s Silchar has suspended five Bangladeshi students for their role in campus violence on September 8.

The Registrar of NIT Silchar issued an order on September 12 announcing their “academic suspension along with expulsion from hostel for a period of two semesters from the institute with immediate effect”. The suspension is in effect until June 2026, the order read.

NIT officials told journalists on Monday (September 5, 2025) that these students were enrolled under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Study In India scholarships.

“We have enough evidence to establish that they were actively involved in campus violence,” NIT Director Dilip Kumar Baidya said, adding that the students would be sent back to Bangladesh.

Violence broke out on the night of September 8, when a group of third-year students allegedly attacked another group inside the NIT hostel. Witnesses said the attackers, armed with rods, knives, and screwdrivers, targeted final-year Bangladeshi students.

Several students were admitted to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for injuries sustained during the assault that lasted about 30 minutes. Two of the injured are in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

S.S. Dhar, the Dean of Students’ Welfare, said that the investigation into the incident and the resultant disciplinary action were satisfactory.
