Assam Elections 2026: Know everything about the sitting CM and cabinet ministers

Assam is heading for elections to its Legislative Assembly. The battle for the 126 constituency seats is heating up, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA alliance aiming to secure a historic third consecutive victory in the northeastern State. 

The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the Assam polls on April 9, and the results will be announced on May 4.

Around 2.49 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes to choose the next government.

Here’s everything you need to know

2021 Assembly elections: Who won? 

The BJP-led NDA alliance won the last elections held in March-April 2021 and secured a historic second consecutive term in the state. NDA won 75 out of 126 seats in the polls. The BJP won 60 seats, Asom Gana Parishad(AGP) won 9 seats, and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) won six seats. 

The Mahajot (Grand Alliance) was led by the Indian National Congress (INC). It won 50 seats but failed to secure a majority to form the government. 

After the win, Himanta Biswa Sarma became the Chief Minister of the State, replacing Sarbananda Sonowal. Debabrata Saikia served as the Leader of the Opposition. 

Who are the cabinet ministers? 

Himanta Biswa Sarma 

Himanta Biswa Sarma is the Chief Minister of Assam and holds the Home, Personnel, PWD, and Medical Education ministries. In 2021, he won by a margin of 1,101,911 votes from the Jalukbari constituency.

Ranjeet Kumar Dass

Mr. Dass handles the Panchayat and Rural Development and Tourism ministries. In 2021, he won from Patacharkuchi by a margin of 62,853 votes.

Atul Bora

Atul Bora is the Minister for Agriculture and Excise. He won from Bokahkhat by a margin of 45,181 votes.

Ajanta Neong 

Ajanta Neong is Assam’s Minister for Finance and Women and Child Development. She won with a margin of 9,325 votes from Golaghat in 2021.

Pijush Hazarika 

Mr. Hazarika is the Minister for Water Resources, Information and Public Relations. He won from Jagiroad by a margin of 29,404 votes. 

Chandra Mohan Patowary

Mr. Patowary is Assam’s Minister for Environment and Forest and won by a margin of 25,034 votes.

Keshab Mahanta 

Keshab Mahanta won in 2021 by a margin of 28,720 votes from Kaliabor and is the state’s minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, IT, Science and Technology.

Dr. Ranoj Pegu

Dr. Pegu is Assam’s Minister for Education(School and Higher) and Tribal Affairs. He won by a margin of 30,792 votes in the previous elections.

Ashok Singhal 

Mr. Singhal is the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Irrigation and won by a margin of 35,070 votes from Dhekiajuli. 

Jogen Mohan 

Mr. Mohan is Assam’s Minister of Hill Areas development, transport, and cooperation. He won by a margin of 14,034 votes from Mahmara.

Bimal Borah 

Bimal Borah is Assam’s Minister of Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprise. He won by an electoral margin of 28,325 votes.

Jayanta Malla Baruah 

Jayanta Baruah is the State’s Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs. He won by an electoral margin of 49,457 votes from Nalbari.

Urkhao Gwra Brahma 

Urkhao Brahma is Assam’s Minister of Handloom, Textiles and Sericulture. He won by an electoral margin of 26,379 votes from the Chapaguri constituency. 

Nandita Gorlosa

Nandita Gorlosa is the state’s Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare and Welfare of Minorities. She won by a margin of 18,598 votes from Haflong.

Prasanta Phukan 

Mr. Phukan is Assam’s Minister of Power, Skill and Employment and won by a margin of 38,005 votes from Dibrugarh. 

Kaushik Rai 

Mr. Rai is Assam’s Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, Mines and Barak Valley development. He won by a margin of 12,700 votes from Lakhipur in the 2021 elections.

Krishnendu Paul 

Krishnendu Paul is Assam’s Minister of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries and won by a margin of 4,142 votes from Patharkandi.

Rupesh Gowala 

Rupesh Gowala is the state’s Minister of Labour Welfare and Tea Tribes Welfare and won by an electoral margin of 8,264 votes from Doom Dooma. 

Charan Boro 

Charan Boro is Assam’s Minister of Welfare of Bodoland and won by a margin of 16,071 votes from Majbat.
