Another blackbuck died in the Kittur Rani Chennamma Zoo in Belagavi on Sunday (November 16, 2025), taking the total toll to 29 in five days. As many as 28 died in the last four days. Officers suspect a bacterial infection caused the deaths.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sunil Panwar, Member Secretary of the Zoo Authority of Karnataka, visited the zoo on Sunday (November 16, 2025). He told reporters that an impartial inquiry would be conducted into the incident.
“It is an unfortunate incident. The Minister has ordered an inquiry into the matter. Strict action will be taken against staff members if their negligence or dereliction of duty is established,” he said, adding that an investigation was being carried out by scientists from the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals.
“Post-mortem of dead animals is being conducted. Based on that report, we will take steps to ensure that such incidents are not repeated,” Dr. Panwar said.
