Swachha Andhra Corporation (SAC) Chairman K. Pattabhi Ram has said the government will present its own cleanliness awards on the lines of the national-level Swachh Survekshan Awards.

Mr. Pattabhi Ram stated that in the first phase, 52 ‘Swachha Andhra Awards’ would be given away in 16 categories.

Addressing the participants in a training session on the government’s cleanliness drive organised by Geostat Informatics here on Saturday, Mr. Pattabhi Ram said Andhra Pradesh had recently won five national awards, and to instill competitive spirit to raise the bar in the maintenance of cleanliness and sanitation, the government decided to introduce its own awards.

Apart from awards, the government intended to give incentives to those excelling in the implementation of sanitation related schemes.

Legacy garbage

The government cleared nearly 90% of the 8.50 million tonnes of garbage left behind by the YSR Congress Party government, and new waste processing units were being set up to ensure that daily waste was processed the same day.

Besides, waste-to-energy plants were being established to generate power from waste, he added. Geostat Informatics MD Vivek Reddy and senior officials of the SAC took part.
