PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday criticised the acquisition of 1,119 acres of agricultural land in Cuddalore district to build another SIPCOT when the district was already facing environmental degradation due to industrial pollution from the coal mines in the area.

Dr. Anbumani criticised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for claiming to be a “Deltakaaran” but not doing enough to protect delta regions, in particular, Cuddalore.

In a statement, Dr. Anbumani said the third largest SIPCOT complex, built on an area of 2,625 acres, already existed in Cuddalore district, releasing toxic waste, but the State government had decided to build another complex in an adjacent area. “This Government Order to acquire land for this purpose has angered farmers and the public. The lands in Kudikaadu and Thyagavalli are extremely fertile, and they provide a yearly income of ₹10 lakh. However, a basic guideline value of ₹3.31 lakh is used to fix compensation. It is much less than the market value and taking over the land will destroy the livelihood of the people,” he contended.

“There will also be environmental degradation and health risks because of the chemical waste from the SIPCOT,” Dr. Anbumani alleged.
