Anantapur pomegranates have moved a step closer to receiving a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, with an official application submitted to the GI Registry at the IPR office in Chennai.
According to a press release here on Sunday, C. Yuvaraj, Vice-Chancellor of MITS Deemed-to-be University, Madanapalle, said that the fruit was known for its deep red arils, high juice content, balanced sweetness, soft seeds and long shelf life, shaped by the region’s unique agro-climatic conditions. He said GI recognition would prevent misuse, ensure better prices for farmers and enhance market value.
