Ammonia gas leak toll climbs to nine

Another woman from Assam has died after the ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur district, taking the death toll to nine on Tuesday (June 23, 2026).

A total of 69 persons are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals, according to a media bulletin issued by the Health department.

The deceased was identified as Anjila Soren. All nine victims were women workers from Odisha and Assam.

The ammonia gas leak was reported on Sunday (June 21) at the seafood processing facility in Kannigaipair/Manjangaranai area near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district.

The affected workers were mainly from Assam, Odisha, Jharkhand, Kerala, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
