Union Home Minister Amit Shah landed in Kolkata on Monday (December 29, 2025) kicking off his three-day visit to West Bengal ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026.

Soon after landing at Kolkata, Mr Shah reached the Salt Lake office of the Bharatiya Janata Party, kicking off a slew of political and organisational meetings scheduled with the leadership of the party’s West Bengal unit during his visit.

This assumes significance in light of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the State’s electoral roll, which the saffron party repeatedly promoted as a necessary exercise ahead of polls in West Bengal to address the alleged presence of unauthorised foreigners in the voters’ list.

Between December 29 and December 31, Mr Shah is also expected to chair several meetings with State BJP leaders including MPs and MLAs, and review the party’s roadmap and preparedness for the upcoming elections. He is also likely to meet with functionaries of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on December 30.

Mr Shah’s visit follows several visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through 2025.
