Concern over the future of the heritage bungalow where former President and philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan lived during his tenure as a professor at the University of Mysore came to the fore at the university’s first academic council meeting of the academic year on Monday, following the recent collapse of a portion of the historic structure.

Located in Saraswathipuram, the bungalow served as Dr. Radhakrishnan’s residence when he taught Philosophy at the University of Mysore. The building was restored to its original grandeur about 12 years ago. However, a section of the Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Centre for Philosophy and Indian Culture recently collapsed, triggering fresh concerns about the preservation of the landmark.

Raising the issue at the meeting, K. Vivekananda, MLC, urged the university to submit proposals to both the State and Union governments seeking financial assistance for the restoration and conservation of the heritage structure.

He said he had also taken up the matter with the Department of Archaeology and Museums, seeking immediate intervention to safeguard and renovate the damaged building. The centre has been closed to students as a precautionary safety measure.

The MLC suggested that the university engage with leading industrialists and corporate organisations to mobilise funds through CSR initiatives for infrastructure development and academic advancement.

Vice-Chancellor M.K. Lokanath informed the meeting that an action plan would be prepared to address the concerns raised by members.
