Advocates stage sit-in protest outside Rajasthan acting Chief Justice’s courtroom

Some advocates of the Rajasthan High Court on Monday (August 31, 2026) staged a sit-in outside the courtroom of Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma here, intensifying their protest against him amid an ongoing controversy over allegations concerning his judicial and administrative functioning.

The advocates sat outside the courtroom while a division Bench of the acting Chief Justice and Justice Sangeeta Sharma was hearing cases.

The protest witnessed slogans being raised against Justice Sharma, marking an unusual escalation in the confrontation between a section of the Bar and the head of the court.

The development comes days after Supreme Court judge Justice Sandeep Mehta wrote three letters to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant raising serious allegations against Justice Sharma and seeking his transfer out of Rajasthan.

In his letters, Justice Mehta alleged “gross maladministration”, misuse of administrative powers and favouritism in the functioning of the Rajasthan High Court.

He also raised allegations concerning case listings and sought appointment of a regular Chief Justice from another high court.
