In a remarkable shift in adoption trends, more girls have been adopted than boys in Kalaburagi district over the last six years, according to the Department of Women and Child Development.

District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Manjula Patil, addressing a press conference in Kalaburagi on Tuesday, said that 110 children were admitted under the department’s care between 2020-2025, of which 54 were adopted. Among them, 34 were girls and 20 boys.

“It is heartening to note that the mindset of the people is gradually changing, and many couples are now coming forward to adopt girls,” Ms. Patil said.

Among the 54 adoptions, nine were by foreign couples, reflecting growing international interest in adoption through legal Indian procedures. The remaining adoptions were by parents from Karnataka and other parts of the country, she said.

Ms. Patil said that the adoption procedures are monitored through the department authorities to prevent illegal or unregistered adoptions, she added.

The Women and Child Development Department has also launched a month-long campaign across Kalaburagi district to educate the public about the legal adoption process.

As part of the initiative, awareness programmes are being held in religious places, educational institutions, and public spaces. Officials are conducting interactive sessions to educate people about applying for adoption legally.

Ms. Patil emphasised that adopting through proper procedures not only protects the child but also safeguards adoptive parents from future legal complications.
