After several dry spells and repeated complaints about wilted plants, the underpass below the Mooppanar flyover near Chamiers Road is set for a makeover. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to replace the faded vertical garden with decorative flower structures for ornamental display.
According to a Corporation official, the project, estimated at nearly ₹1.25 crore, involves not only ornamentation but also the rejuvenation of the space beneath the flyover. This includes constructing a reinforced concrete underpass with approach roads, drainage lines, and retaining walls to improve vehicle movement under the bridge.
The plan features decorative flower installations with red rose, red hibiscus, and golden sunflower motifs on the flyover, and white jasmine, orange marigold, and red rose motifs within the underpass section.
Meanwhile, similar attention to the greenery under other flyovers, such as those on T.T.K. Road and in Royapettah, is yet to be given. Sundara Vadivel, a regular commuter along T.T.K Road said the vertical garden set up under the flyover has been in poor condition for several days and has been neglected. “The same set up under the flyover close to Vani Mahal in T.Nagar was removed a few months ago. The same artificial plants and rejuvenation must be put up under these bridges soon to curb waste dumping, open defecation and from being occupied by tipplers after dark,” he said.
An official in GCC stated that the flyovers at Doveton, Kalaivanar, Peters Road, Conronsmith Road, Rangarajapuram, and Vyasarpadi would all get a makeover, but only next year. Plans include new greenery, better lighting powered by solar energy, and CCTV cameras for safety. People can look forward to walking paths, ornamental plants, benches, and even play areas or open gyms. The budget for the Kalaivanar flyover is ₹3.74 crore, Doveton ₹3.25 crore, and Rangarajapuram railway overbridge ₹2.53 crore, he said.
