The CBI has arrested a man from Uttar Pradesh in connection with his role in the murder of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s aide Chandrakant Rath.

Raj Kumar Singh, believed to be a key accused in the case, was arrested from Muzaffarnagar on Monday (May 18, 2026). He has been taken to Kolkata to be produced in the court there, an agency source told The Hindu.

“Earlier a person by the same name had been arrested in the case, but his turned out to be pseudonym,” they added.

The CBI took over the probe into Rath’s murder from the West Bengal Police following a request from the State government.

The State police had earlier arrested three persons in the case. Two accused — Mayank Raj Mishra and Vicky Maurya — were detained from Buxar in Bihar, while the third, Raj Singh, was detained from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh on May 10.

Rath, the personal assistant to Mr. Adhikari, was shot dead in Madhyamgram on May 6, two days after the declaration of the fiercely contested West Bengal Assembly poll results.

The central agency has formed a seven-member special investigation team under a DIG of Special Crime from Delhi, comprising some of the best investigators drawn from its various units, the officials said.
