Andhra Pradesh government will ensure continuous supply of safe drinking water to every household by 2028 under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Tuesday.

Joining virtually from his camp office in Amaravati, Mr. Naidu participated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the Centre and the States held in New Delhi.

He said the State is committed to achieving the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ goal by ensuring tap water connections to every household.

The State government is giving top priority to the operation and maintenance of rural drinking water supply systems, he said, adding that a comprehensive policy for the same was announced in September 2025, with maintenance responsibilities entrusted to panchayats.

Mr. Naidu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Union Cabinet’s decision to extend the Jal Jeevan Mission till 2028. He also urged the Centre to extend support for completion of the Polavaram Project before the Godavari Pushkarams.

Speaking after signing the MoU with the State, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil said that approvals for JJM 2.0 were granted based on the requests from various States.

He appreciated Mr. Naidu for taking up the matter with the Prime Minister and proposing the extension of the mission.

Mr. Patil said that under the first phase of the Jal Jeevan Mission, tap connections were provided to 16 crore households across the country.

Efforts are on to cover another 3 crore houses, he said and suggested involving the DWCRA women in water quality testing in Andhra Pradesh. He noted that the mission would significantly reduce the burden on women who travel long distances to fetch water.

He expressed confidence that the goal of providing tap connections to every household in the State would be achieved under JJM 2.0, adding that access to safe drinking water is crucial for achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047.

Mr. Naidu noted that Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan is closely monitoring the implementation of the mission.

Officials from the Centre and the State signed the MoU at the Union Jal Shakti Ministry in New Delhi. With this agreement, infrastructure development and maintenance of water supply systems under the supervision of panchayats are expected to be strengthened. The target is to achieve ‘Har Ghar Jal’ goals by December 2028.
