The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham on Wednesday (December 3) demanded immediate government intervention to support farmers who suffered major crop losses due to the recent Montha cyclone. Sangham district Secretary K. Srinivas called for the supply of quality gunny bags and compensation under crop insurance to those affected by the drastic fall in paddy yield.

Speaking to the media after inspecting paddy stored at drying yards in Munduru and Vegivada villages of Pedavegi mandal, Mr. Srinivas said many farmers and tenant cultivators were facing severe hardship because of reduced productivity. “The cyclone has reduced yields by 10-15 bags per acre, pushing farmers into heavy losses,” he said.

He emphasized that even though the government is purchasing paddy and making timely payments as per norms, the reduced yield is forcing farmers into debt. Mr. Srinivas demanded relaxation of moisture percentage norms and immediate shifting of existing paddy stocks to mills.

He also urged the government to stop supplying torn and poor-quality gunny bags, stating that they were causing additional difficulties for farmers. “The government must pay crop insurance compensation proportional to the reduced yield and provide durable sacks to protect farmers’ produce,” he said.
