The Telangana Government on Thursday issued orders ratifying the action of the Commissioner of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in engaging the services of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, for providing technical advisory and consultancy services with regard to the Municipal Solid Waste Processing and Disposal Facility at Jawaharnagar.
The consultancy services, costing ₹1.99 crore encompass the assessment of legacy waste and feasibility of bio-mining for a period of two years.
Appointment of IIT-Bombay as the technical consultant for MSW management in Jawaharnagar followed a case filed in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) about the pollution caused by the SWM facility in the surrounding villages.
As per the directions of the NGT, consultations were held with the Central Pollution Control Board, and IIT-Bombay, before the proposal for technical advisory was made.
The terms of reference include, among others, independent technical oversight and environmental monitoring, assessment of leachate management, ground water, air quality and storm water systems, recommendations for decentralisation and reduction of MSW inflow, scientific studies for feasibility of bio-mining of legacy waste, and advisory support during implementation.
