As Andhra Pradesh enters the second week of December, many places in the State, including those in Rayalaseema, have begun reporting a drop in daily minimum temperatures.

The winter chills are likely to continue in the State till December 25, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD-Amaravati), with minimum temperatures likely to drop below normal over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

In the weekly forecast report released on Friday, the IMD said that while daytime temperatures would remain below normal in South Coastal A.P. and Rayalaseema during the period, they are likely to be above normal in North Coastal A.P.

At 12 degrees Celsius, Arogyavaram of Annamayya district recorded the lowest temperature among the IMD’s 21 automatic weather stations (AWS) in the State on Saturday. However, the IMD doesn’t have an AWS in Lambasingi in Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district, known for its low temperature during winter, or any nearby place. According to the IMD, a request has been sent to the government to install more AWS in the State.

According to the A.P. State Development Planning Society (APSDPS), the lowest of 4.4 degrees Celsius was recorded at Dalapathiguda of Araku Valley in ASR district during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday (December 14). On Friday-Saturday, the same station had recorded 3.3 degree Celsius.

Many places in Chittoor, Kurnool, Tirupati and Prakasam also recorded minimum temperatures below 13 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday. Vijayawada recorded 17.7 degrees Celsius, and Nunna, on the outskirts of the city, recorded 14.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 19 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Visakhapatnam, too, recorded its minimum temperature between 14 and 17 degrees Celsius.

Asked about the reported spotting of ice formation in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, IMD-Amaravati Director S. Stella said when the temperature drops in a hill station, the dew crystalises, forming ground frost, which is different from snow fall. Since a few areas in ASR district have been recording a temperature of 3-4 degrees Celisus for the past 3-4 days, the ice formation could be ground frost, the Director said.

Tourists flock to ASR district

Popular tourist destinations across the Agency region witnessed a heavy inflow of visitors from various parts of the State. Tourist spots such as Borra Caves, Chaparai, Katika Waterfalls, Vanjangi, the Tribal Museum, Padmapuram Gardens, Wooden Bridge, Madagada View Point, Lambasingi and several other locations were seen packed with tourists.

Borra Caves alone attracted as many as 5,500 tourists on Sunday, generating a revenue of ₹5.13 lakh. On Saturday (December 13), the number of visitors stood at 6,900, with the revenue collection amounting to ₹5.22 lakh.

Similarly, Vanjangi, the hotspot in Paderu mandal, popularly known as ‘Meghala Kondalu’, drew large crowds, receiving 4,257 tourists on Sunday and 2,582 visitors on Saturday.
