The Kochi City police have ruled out suspicion over a sum of ₹81 lakh allegedly looted from a steel trading firm at Kundannoor by an armed gang on October 8.

District Police Chief (Kochi City) Putta Vimaladitya on Friday (October 17) said that the stolen amount was accounted money. He, however, said that the police were verifying the claim of those arrested in the case that the money was intended to be used for shady deals.

The officer said as many as 11 people had been arrested in the case, and that a search was on for a suspect who was still on the run.

On reports of the involvement of a Tamil Nadu-based gang in the incident, Mr. Vimaladitya said the police had not found any evidence linking the incident to such a group. “All the accused we have nabbed are from Kerala. It is yet to be confirmed if they were involved in other similar crimes. Though the accused claimed that the complainant was involved in a discussion on money laundering, we have not found evidence that the cash was kept at the shop for such a purpose,” Mr. Vimaladitya said.
