BC Reservations Sadhana Samakhya Joint Action Committee (JAC) has condemned the Supreme Court verdict striking down the State government’s petition on 42% reservation for BCs, and described it “a severe blow to social justice.”
National president Dundra Kumaraswamy said, the “verdict is contrary to the constitutional spirit of social justice. It tramples upon the rights of BCs who have been historically marginalised. This is not merely a struggle for reservations — it is a movement for dignity and self-respect.”
Addressing the media, the JAC referred to recent ruling by SC on the Governor’s assent to bills: “If the Governor fails to act within the stipulated time, the bill is deemed to have received assent. The same principle should apply to the Telangana BC Reservations Bill as well.”
On 50% cap on reservations and its legality, they pointed out that the SC itself had clarified that the 50% limit can be exceeded if there is adequate empirical data to justify it. And in Telangana, BCs constitute a substantial population.
The JAC leaders also compared the Telangana situation with Tamil Nadu’s. “Just as Tamil Nadu increased its reservation limits through constitutional amendment and inclusion in the ninth schedule, the Centre must now amend the Constitution to include BC reservation under it. Only then will true social justice be achieved.”
Calling for nationwide bandh on Saturday, and terming it “a battle for equality and dignity”, the JAC appealed for peaceful participation.
OU postpones exams
Observing the bandh, Osmania University said it was postponing all the examinations scheduled for Saturday. A fresh schedule of the examination would be communciated.
OU Backward Classes professors’ forum expressed solidarity with the Telangana BC JAC for demanding 42% reservation for them. The forum gave a call to all its members from the campus and the constituent colleges to assemble outside University College of Arts and Social Science at 10.30 a.m.
