Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday said the High Court deserved credit for the arrest of two former Travancore Devaswom Board presidents in the Sabarimala gold misappropriation case.

He said that without the High Court’s supervision, the case would have ended with the arrest of just three or four lower-level officials. It was only due to the court’s intervention that an impartial investigation was taking place.

Mr. Chennithala, a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee, urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to break his silence, which he described as mysterious, especially since two important CPI(M) leaders had been arrested and remanded in judicial custody in the case.

“It’s the turn of the Ministers now. Media reports suggest that former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran will soon be in the dock. But that is not enough. The present Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan should also be questioned to uncover the whole truth,” he said.

Accusing the CPI(M)-led government of trying to destroy Sabarimala, Mr. Chennithala said they had earlier attempted to do so by pushing for the entry of women of all ages into the temple. Now, they were doing it by misappropriating gold belonging to the temple.

He further alleged that no adequate preparations had been made ahead of the Mandalam-Makaravilakku season, resulting in unending queues and immense hardship for devotees.
