Kerala’s Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM)] MLA U. Prathibha has sparked controversy with her remarks that the trend of inviting stars who “barely wear clothes” for inaugurations is on the rise in the State.

Speaking at an event at Kayamkulam recently, Ms. Prathibha said, “when an actor comes without wearing proper clothes, people flock to that programme in large numbers. We should tell them to stop that. Are the people of Kerala so lustful? They should be asked to come dressed properly. Do not accuse me of being moralistic for saying this. It is just about dressing decently. We live in a country where people have the freedom to wear or not to wear clothes,” the Kayamkulam MLA said.

She also criticised a television show hosted by a popular actor, without naming the programme.

“There is a peeping-tom show being aired in the evenings in Kerala now. The show involves watching others secretly while they sleep and commenting on how tight their clothes are. An immortal actor is hosting this show. What democracy needs are not star kings, but real human beings who work among the people and we must have the courage to say that,” the MLA said.
