The northeast monsoon, which brings the major share of Tamil Nadu’s annual rainfall, is likely to commence around October 16, slightly ahead of its normal onset date of October 20.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, conditions are becoming favourable for the complete withdrawal of southwest monsoon from the country during the first half of the week starting from October 16.

In its bulletin, the RMC has said that this would lead to the simultaneous establishment of easterly/northeasterly winds over southern peninsular region, south and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, paving the way for the onset of the northeast monsoon.

Tamil Nadu has been experiencing wet weather this week, with several districts recording moderate to heavy rainfall. On Thursday, several places, including Karaikal, Kodaikanal, Udhagamandalam, Tiruppur, and Villivakkam and Chembarambakkam in Chennai received light rainfall till 8 p.m.

The RMC has predicted scattered rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds, of speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph, to continue till October 15.

On Friday, seven districts, including the Nilgiris, Krishnagiri and Vellore, are likely to receive isolated intense rainfall owing to weather systems extending to Comorin area.

Chennai will continue to receive light or moderate rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning in some areas on Friday.
