AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on Tuesday (October 13, 2026), criticised the TVK-led Tamil Nadu government over purchase of electricity reportedly at ₹37 per unit. He further criticised the alleged attempt to favour private players.

Citing reports in this regard, Mr. Palaniswami said the Andhra Pradesh government has reportedly signed an agreement on September 9 to purchase power at ₹16-20 per unit. No other State has signed an agreement at ₹32-37 per unit like Tamil Nadu, he charged.

The former Chief Minister criticised Tamil Nadu CM C. Joseph Vijay over the purchase, which, he said is the highest rate with regard to electricity purchase from private players by the State. Mr. Palaniswami further called for dropping the agreement.

BJP State unit president Nainar Nagenthran also criticised the TVK-led government, and expressed shock over the high rate.

Pointing to the prevailing weather conditions in the country, Mr. Nagenthran contended that the State government should have taken up precautionary measures and initiated proper planning over electricity procurement in advance.
