A major cache of arms, including two assault rifles, four pistols and 11 grenades, was recovered in north Kashmir’s Handwara on Saturday (October 10, 2026).

It’s a major arms haul in a region relatively peaceful in recent times. “The recovery represents a significant achievement in the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts of Sopore Police. Further investigation will also focus on establishing the circumstances surrounding the concealment of the recovered material and identifying all persons involved,” said a police spokesman.

The spokesman said the recovery was made in the forest area of Mukaam Cherhar, Sopore, during a joint cordon and search operation.

Security forces were acting on specific intelligence inputs generated by the Sopore Police, the spokesman said.

“During the search operation, a blue barrel and a bag were found concealed beneath a large boulder. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was immediately called to the spot for examination and safe handling of the suspected explosive material,” said the police.

The police said arms, ammunition and other material were recovered from the spot. Two assault rifles (01 AK-47 and 01 AK-76) along with 07 magazines and ammunition; four pistols along with 04 magazines and ammunition; one multi grenade launcher (MGL) with 05 rounds; 11 hand grenades; and three Improvised Explosive Devices with remote controls, 08 detonators and 02 timers.

The police said a Y-SMS set, prima cords, wires, battery cells, IED-related components and miscellaneous accessories. “The recovered material was taken into possession in accordance with due legal procedure, with necessary safety precautions,” the police said.

The police lodged a case under Sections 13, 18, 20 and 23 of the UAPA, Section 7/25 of the Arms Act and Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.

“Further investigation is underway to establish the source and ownership of the recovered material, identify those involved in its concealment and ascertain possible terrorist linkages,” the police said.
