The police have decided not to register a case against CPI(M) district secretary E.N. Suresh Babu over his alleged defamatory comments about Shafi Parambil, MP.
A complaint had been filed by Congress block president C.V. Satheesan against Mr. Babu’s recent remarks about Mr. Shafi.
The police said that they would not register the case based on a third-party complaint, citing Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 356, which deals with defamation procedures. They said the case would only be filed if directed by the court.
The Congress accused the police of double standards. It said the police were afraid of the CPI(M) secretary. Mr. Satheesan said he would approach a court.
Despite Mr. Shafi’s threat to take legal action against Mr. Babu, he has not filed a complaint yet. Mr. Babu, however, remained unrepentant and refused to retract his sexual accusations against Mr. Shafi.
