A woman who says she has lost 30 kg has shared some candid advice for people beginning or already navigating their weight-loss journey. Instagram user snimsdiary believes one of the most effective ways to stay focused is to keep your goals, plans and progress private.
In a video shared on Instagram, she talks about how the reactions of people around you can change once they see that you are becoming more disciplined and sticking to your goals.
‘Don’t tell anybody about your goals’
Sharing what she describes as the “single greatest advice” she can give someone on a weight-loss journey, she says, “Move in silence.”
“Don’t tell anybody about your goals, about your journey, about your plans. Don’t share anything with anyone,” she says.
According to her, people may initially be excited and supportive when you tell them that you want to lose weight or make lifestyle changes. But she believes that reaction can change once they see you consistently following through.
‘One drink won’t hurt’
She says the pressure can start when people notice that someone is regularly making different choices.
“As soon as you like start actually showing up regularly, as soon as you start coming out with the changes, as soon as you start being the disciplined version of yourself,” she says, people may begin encouraging them to make exceptions.
She gives examples of comments such as, “One drink won’t hurt, one cupcake won’t hurt, this dessert won’t hurt.”
She also recalls people questioning why someone is being “so uptight” or taking their goals “too seriously”.
‘It is that serious and it is that deep’
The Instagrammer says comments about someone becoming “too thin” or taking their goals too seriously can also become part of the pressure. “It’s not that serious. It’s not that deep,” she says, referring to what people may tell someone during their transformation.
“But it is. It is that serious, and it is that deep,” she adds. For her, staying committed to a goal is a personal decision, and outside opinions should not be allowed to derail the progress someone has made.
‘It makes people uncomfortable’
The woman also shares her personal interpretation of why people may try to discourage someone who is changing their habits. “I realised that it makes people uncomfortable if they see somebody else doing the things that they wish they could or they had the discipline to,” she says.
She adds that taking personal goals seriously can sometimes “ruffle a lot of feathers”, particularly when people around you are not making similar changes. Her advice, therefore, is to be selective about who gets to hear about your journey.
‘Don’t let peer pressure ruin your progress’
She recommends keeping the journey private or sharing it only with people who genuinely have your best interests at heart. “Don’t let peer pressure ruin all of your progress,” she says.
She also advises against allowing people who are not trying to improve themselves to interfere with someone else’s efforts. Her message is ultimately about boundaries and staying focused on personal goals. Having lost 30 kg herself, she frames keeping certain plans private as a way of protecting the discipline and consistency needed to continue the journey.
