A 36-year-old woman from Bengaluru was arrested by Vaniyambadi town police in Tirupattur on Wednesday for pledging fake gold jewellery with a pawnbroker in the area.

Police said V. Rajana, 36, a resident of Bengaluru, was arrested on charges of cheating. Initial inquiry revealed that K. Dhilip Kumar, 26, was running a pawn shop near Vaniyambadi. On July 17, Rajana visited his shop and claimed that she had to pledge three sovereigns of gold jewellery for the medical expenses of her husband, who has been admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru. She also gave a few fake medical documents to substantiate her claim.

Police said Kumar conducted a preliminary test on the gold jewellery and gave her ₹1.5 lakh. After she left, Kumar examined the jewellery again and found that only a small portion of the ornament was gold and the remaining metal was fake. He alerted Vaniyambadi police, and a case was registered. Special teams analysed CCTV footage and found Rajana in her hideout in Bengaluru. She was lodged at sub-jail in Tirupattur town. Further probe is under way.
