A 45-year-old woman from Warangal, who was allegedly confined and harassed in Muscat for nearly 25 days, has returned to India following the intervention of BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao.
Mohammed Mahamuda travelled to Oman on July 16 on a tourist visa after being promised domestic work. She alleged that an agent handed her over to a sub-agent, who seized her passport and mobile phone and confined her to a room.
She also alleged that she was forced to work against her wishes and was subjected to harassment and physical assault. When she sought to return to India, she was allegedly threatened with being implicated in a theft case.
The sub-agent reportedly demanded ₹1.13 lakh for her release, claiming that the amount had been spent on bringing her to Muscat.
The issue was brought to the notice of Mr. Rao, who assured that he would bear the expenses for her return. Following his intervention, efforts were made to trace her with the help of the Indian Embassy and Muscat Police.
After nearly a week of efforts, Ms. Mahamuda was traced and rescued. She was taken to the Indian Embassy and kept under the care of officials for three days. Her passport was later recovered from the sub-agent.
Ms. Mahamuda reached Hyderabad safely on Tuesday (August 11, 2026) and thanked Mr. Rao and others involved in securing her release.
Speaking to the media on her arrival, Ms. Mahamuda said KTR responded immediately after learning about her plight. “KTR coordinated with the BRS NRI Cell to seek the help of the Indian Embassy and local authorities and bring me here,” she said, thanking KTR for standing by her during the difficult period and helping her return safely to her family.
Mr. Rao urged people seeking jobs in Gulf countries not to travel on tourist visas. He advised job seekers to travel only on valid employment or work visas and verify recruitment agents, employers and job offers before leaving India.
He said people should be cautious of unverified agents as they could face exploitation and other difficulties abroad.
