Cane crushing began at a co-operative sugar mill at Kacharapalayam near Kallakurichi on Monday. It was formally inaugurated by Collector J.E. Padmaja.

According to officials, crushing of about 3.25 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, cultivated on about 11,890 acres, at the co-operative mill during the crushing period was the target.
