A 22-year-old student was killed when a speeding truck knocked her down while she was negotiating a bad patch of road near Budigere cross in Avalahalli Police Station limits on Monday.
The victim identified as Dhanushree, a resident of Hoskote and a final-year BCom student at a private college. On her way to college, while passing through Boodigere Cross she was trying to to avoid a bad patch of road when a truck from behind knocked her down. Dhanushree lost balance and slipped under the moving truck, and was killed on the spot.
The truck driver escaped soon after the accident. The police rushed to the spot and shifted the body for autopsy while registering a case of hit and run against the driver. The police have recovered the CCTV camera footage for further investigations, while the passers-by vented their ire blaming the bad road stretch for the accident.
A week ago, residents of Varthur and Gunjur staged a peaceful protest demanding pothole-free roads and urgent development of the nearby Varthur–Gunjur stretch, which has become hazardous due to poor maintenance.
The residents, including children and senior citizens, stood with placards calling for safer roads citing repeated accidents and a recent incident of a school bus breaking down as examples of the civic mess in the area. Their demands include resurfacing of the road, installation of traffic signals and turn-over, and long-term infrastructure upgrades.
