Water level continued to surge in the Godavari at Basar in Nirmal district on Sunday due to release of floodwaters from the upstream dams, leaving several low-lying areas near the Godavari banks in the temple town inundated.

Floodwaters from the river encircled several private lodges and a choultry causing severe inconvenience to the devotees amid the ongoing Sarannavaratri festivities in the temple town, the abode of Goddess Gnana Saraswati. Sources said that the devotees had to wade through knee-deep water in the flooded streets.

Despite brief pause in rains in most parts of north Telangana on Sunday, water level in the Godavari and its tributaries surged owing to the discharge of huge quantities of excess water from the irrigation projects in the river’s upper reaches in Maharashtra.

All the irrigation projects including the Sriramsagar (SRSP), Kaddam Narayan Reddy and Sripada Yellampalli projects are brimming with water due to steady inflows from the upstream dams. The Godavari river is in free flow condition at Lakshmi (Medigadda) barrage of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) in Mahadevpur mandal of Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. The inflow and outflow stood at 8.03 lakh cusecs at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

In Bhadradri Kothagudem district, the first flood warning remained in force in Bhadrachalam as the Godavari continued to flow at 43.50 feet, a few notches above the first flood warning mark, in the temple town at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
