The Godavari river continued to hover just above the first flood warning mark of 43 feet in the temple town on Saturday night.

Heavy discharge of water from the upstream reservoirs led to a surge in the water level in the Godavari, which flows through the temple towns of Basar, Dharmapuri, Kaleshwaram and Bhadrachalam in the State over the past 48 hours.

The river water level in Bhadrachalam remained a few notches above 43 feet, carrying around 9.60 lakh cusecs of floodwaters, at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Heavy rains in the catchment areas along Telangana-Chhattisgarh border pushed up the water level in Taliperu river, a tributary of the Godavari, in Charla mandal of Bhadrachalam Agency.

As many as 20 crest gates of the Taliperu reservoir in Charla mandal were lifted on Saturday to let out excess water downstream.
