Four persons were arrested by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Arakkonam railway station in Ranipet on Sunday for stealing copper wires from the railway yard.

The police said the arrested persons were identified as G. Ajith, 26, V. Murugan, 22, R. Vishwanathan, 21, and K. Rathinasamy, 47.

Initial inquiry revealed that railway officials found that copper wires on signalling systems along the track between Arakkonam and Tiruttani and Arakkonam and Katpadi were missing for the past several weeks. It had reportedly delayed the movement of trains on the route.

The Railway police formed special teams to nab the suspects. During a routine inspection along the Arakkonam – Tiruttani route, a railway police team intercepted a trio who told the police that they were involved in the theft of copper wires.

They also told police that they used to sell stolen copper wires to scrap merchant Rathinasamy in Tiruttani. A case was registered. Arrested persons were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
