The pedestrian subway at the Guntur railway station will remain temporarily closed from Friday (June 19) to June 30 to facilitate engineering works aimed at addressing water seepage caused by excess groundwater ingress, South Coast Railway’s Guntur Division announced on Thursday.
According to railway officials, the closure will enable the expansion of the existing sump and execution of allied infrastructure works designed to improve drainage and prevent water accumulation in the subway, particularly during the monsoon season.
The project is part of the Railways’ initiative to enhance passenger safety and ensure uninterrupted usability of the subway. Officials said the increased sump capacity would allow for more effective collection and pumping of seepage water, reducing inconvenience to passengers.
During the closure period, passengers have been advised to use the available foot over-bridges and other designated crossing facilities within the station premises. The Guntur Division said adequate signage and public announcements would be arranged to guide passengers and minimise disruption.
The SCR expressed regret for the temporary inconvenience and sought cooperation of passengers while the essential improvement works are carried out in the interest of safety, accessibility and passenger comfort.
